HB: Here is a shameless plug for the excellent Richard Blandford's latest ...
"My new novel, Flying Saucer Rock & Roll, is out now. It tells the story of five teenage boys who form a band, get too drunk on imported Russian beer, and somewhere along the way, accidentally grow up. Along the way, they encounter pedantic punks, bad jobs, worse girlfriends, working men's clubs, venture scouts, and art school.
Following my first book Hound Dog, which is considered by many to be the definitive Elvis impersonator/public urination/swearing novel, I knew I had to up my game if I was going to meet the expectations of the literally tens of people who follow my work. I wrote Flying Saucer Rock & Roll (or FSRAR, as it's known in the trade) as a way of exploring philosophical ideas
that interest me, such as the dividing line between competence and genius, and the moral implications of breaking down the barrier between art and life. I also wanted to cash in on the market for early nineties nostalgia before anybody else did.
The writing process for this second book was probably harder than the first, partly because I didn't want to stick to the easy option of doing what I already knew would work, and partly because it's a much subtler story. Writing about things happening is quite easy. Writing about not much happening is a lot harder (which isn't to say that nothing happens at all.
That's my next book).
Finally I would like to point out that the inside cover of the book is unexpectedly shiny, and feels
very nice to the touch. This alone has been considered worth the price of purchase by all who have felt it."
Richard has been a very good editor for us: honest, tactful, tough and subtle. If you want to pick up a copy of Flying Saucer Rock & Roll then you can just click this link.
